Clicks before code: configuring Salesforce sustainably
Salesforce can be extended almost without limit, which is both its strength and its risk. Many organizations accumulate custom fields, objects, automations and code over years until the system becomes slow, confusing and expensive to change. A sustainable approach uses standard features and declarative tools first, adding code only where configuration cannot meet the need.
Flow handles most automation that once required Apex, including record updates, approvals and screen-guided processes. Standard objects, page layouts and validation rules cover many requirements without custom development. When code is necessary, it should follow clear patterns, be covered by tests and be documented for future administrators.
Before building, revisit whether Salesforce is the right platform for the process. Our Salesforce vs HubSpot comparison explains where each CRM fits, and sometimes a simpler tool or an integration with an existing system serves the need better than more customization. Governance keeps the org healthy as it grows. A change process, naming conventions, sandbox testing and periodic reviews of unused fields and automations prevent the gradual sprawl that makes many Salesforce instances hard to manage.
