How to vet a Python developer
Python is used for web backends, data pipelines, automation, machine learning and scripting, so start by defining which kind of Python work you need. A Django or FastAPI backend developer, a data engineer and a machine learning engineer share the language but very different skills. Mismatched expectations are the most common reason a Python hire disappoints.
For any role, look for clean, idiomatic code with type hints, sensible project structure, dependency management with tools such as uv or Poetry, and tests with pytest. Ask candidates to read and improve a short piece of messy Python, which reveals more than writing new code from scratch. Our Python development page explains how we structure projects.
For backend roles, check database skills, API design and background job handling. For data roles, check pandas, SQL and pipeline orchestration. In both cases, ask how they deployed and monitored code in production, since many Python developers have only worked in notebooks or local scripts.
- Clarity about backend, data or machine learning focus.
- Idiomatic Python with type hints and tests.
- Reliable dependency and environment management.
- Strong SQL and data handling skills.
- Production deployment and monitoring experience.
- Reads and improves existing code respectfully.
