Rules online retailers in India must follow
The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules require online sellers and marketplaces to show seller details, total prices including all charges, return, refund and exchange policies, and the country of origin for goods, and to appoint a grievance officer who responds within set timelines. Packaged goods listings must carry Legal Metrology declarations such as manufacturer, net quantity and maximum retail price, just as the physical pack does. Missing fields can lead to listings being blocked.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority's guidelines on dark patterns prohibit tricks such as false urgency, hidden charges added at checkout, forced subscriptions and confusing cancellation flows. Tax rules matter too: marketplaces collect tax at source under GST and large businesses must issue e-invoices. Customer data falls under the DPDP Act. - Display return and refund terms on every product page.
- Capture Legal Metrology fields in the product catalog structure.
- Make cancellation as easy as subscription signup.
- Record marketing consent separately from order data.
