How to evaluate a dedicated team partner
A dedicated team is a long-term relationship, so evaluate the partner as carefully as you would a key hire. Look beyond portfolios at how they recruit and retain engineers, how they replace someone who leaves, how team leads report progress and how they handle disagreements about scope or quality. Speak with clients who have worked with them for more than a year, since early enthusiasm says little about long-term delivery.
Ask to interview proposed team members yourself and to see how they work in practice: code review standards, testing habits, documentation and communication across time zones. A trustworthy partner is transparent about seniority, allocation and who actually does the work, and puts intellectual property ownership, confidentiality and exit terms in writing before the team starts.
Fit matters as much as skill. The best dedicated teams adopt your product goals and rituals, raise problems early and suggest improvements rather than waiting for instructions. Look for partners whose engineers ask thoughtful questions about your users during interviews. Ask how they onboarded a recent client's product.
- How do you recruit, vet and retain engineers?
- Can we interview and approve every team member?
- How quickly can you replace someone who leaves?
- How do you report progress, risks and quality?
- Who owns the code, documentation and accounts?
- What happens if we scale the team down or end the engagement?
- How do you handle holidays and planned leave?
