Business Central vs Finance and Operations
Microsoft offers two main ERP products in the Dynamics 365 family. Business Central targets small and mid-size businesses with finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, projects and light manufacturing in one application. It is quicker to implement, easier to administer and extends through AL code and AppSource apps.
Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, often called Finance and Operations, targets larger and more complex organizations with multiple legal entities, advanced manufacturing, warehousing and global operations. It offers deeper functionality but requires larger implementation teams and longer timelines.
Choosing between them depends on transaction volumes, process complexity, number of entities and countries, and internal IT capacity. Many mid-size companies that once considered larger ERPs find Business Central sufficient, especially when combined with Power Platform tools. Both integrate with Microsoft 365, Teams, Power BI and Dataverse, which is a major advantage for organizations already invested in Microsoft technologies. That integration reduces the need for separate tools for reporting, approvals and collaboration.
