  • Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023

    The DPDP Act requires clear consent notices (available in English or any language in the Eighth Schedule), purpose limits, security safeguards, breach intimation and rights to access, correct and erase data, with stricter rules for children's data. The DPDP Rules 2025, notified in November 2025, phase in over 18 months, with most obligations on businesses applying from May 2027. Read our DPDP Act explainer.   • RBI rules for payments and data storage

    The Reserve Bank of India requires payment system data to be stored only in India, bans merchants from storing card numbers (card-on-file tokenization replaces them), sets e-mandate rules for recurring payments and regulates payment aggregators. In practice, apps take payments through RBI-authorized gateways and never hold raw card data.

  • GST and e-invoicing

    Billing software must produce GST-compliant invoices with GSTIN, HSN or SAC codes and correct CGST, SGST or IGST splits. Businesses above the notified turnover threshold must report B2B invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal and print the returned IRN and signed QR code, and goods movement may need e-way bills.

  • IT Act 2000 and CERT-In directions

    The Information Technology Act is the base law for electronic records, signatures and cyber offences. CERT-In's 2022 directions require reporting specified cyber incidents within six hours and keeping system logs for 180 days within India, which shapes logging, monitoring and incident response design.

    The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules 2020 require seller details, return and refund policies, grievance officers and country of origin information. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's guidelines on dark patterns rule out tricks like false urgency, basket sneaking and confusing cancellation flows.
