Options short of full ERP replacement
Replacing an ERP completely is one of the most disruptive projects a company can undertake. Fortunately, many problems with an aging ERP can be addressed without full replacement. The right option depends on whether the core system is still functionally sound and supported by its vendor.
Rehosting the ERP in the cloud improves availability, backups and remote access without changing the application itself. Adding an integration layer with APIs lets ecommerce platforms, CRMs and mobile apps exchange data with the ERP reliably, instead of through manual exports.
Modern web and mobile screens built on top of the ERP can give field staff, managers and customers simpler interfaces for specific tasks, such as approvals or order entry, while the ERP remains the system of record. When modules are genuinely outdated, they can be rebuilt or replaced one at a time, for example moving production planning to a specialized tool while finance stays in the existing ERP. Full replacement is reserved for systems that are unsupported or fundamentally unsuitable.
